Are Coupon Deal Websites Good For Your Hypnosis Practice?

Coupon deal websites like Groupon could be one way to promote YOUR hypnosis services.  Or they could COST you.  So, before you start offering $30 hypnosis sessions on these websites consider this…

Everything serves a purpose:

For example, if you’re just starting out, your purpose might be to get some warm bodies into your chair so you can get more experience and build your skills.

Also, if business is slow, your purpose may be to offer some quick deals in an effort to get a few more paying clients to help cover the monthly bills.

Finally, if your purpose is to compile a few testimonials for your website, offering a discount in exchange for some positive feedback might be an effective way to getting some.

Whatever your needs and goals may be, you just need to be clear in setting conditions of the deal while having a strategy.

However, it’s NOT a smart way to conduct normal business:

Sure, getting a flood of new “clients” to help put a few dollars in your pocket, and offering a deal in exchange some kind words may sound like a win-win situation for everyone.  But there are a few drawbacks to this fairy tale.

The main one to consider is that the majority of people who take advantage of these coupon offer websites are bargain hunters.  In fact, since they would never be willing to pay your usual fee, getting a “deal” is really the only benefit they’re interested in.

What's more is that since they are bargain hunter shoppers at heart, they will usually expect you to bend over backwards by demanding an even higher level of attention than a regular client who just happened upon your website.

The next thing to consider is your reputation.  Once you elect to list your services on these websites, in the eyes of the ad reader, you are not a quality Hypnotherapist who offers a great service that changes lives - instead you are a bargain hypnotist who offers cheap deals to get more customers.  Sorry but that is the reality.

And the last problem is that offering select people a discount it is not a consistent way of doing business.  Word of mouth in business seems to travel quickly, and this could irritate your regular clients who find out that they paid more simply because they were not lucky enough to find your coupon ad online.  So, you may need to get ready to offer some partial refunds if the word gets out.

In the end, there is nothing wrong with using these websites if you are simply running a special, releasing a new product, or just starting out in business.  Also, you should include any specials directly on your website to give ALL potential clients the same opportunity to take advantage of any deals you are offering.  However, if you are an established professional in the field, using these websites to simply scoop up more business can end up doing more harm than good because this is what will set the public tone for what type of hypnosis provider you are...

"The Discount Provider" or "The Experienced Professional."

One key to success

Many people ask us what exactly contributes to our success. We believe that it all boils down to under promising yet over delivering.

For example, if you promise someone a thousand dollars and end up earning them a million, he or she will be one happy camper. However, if you promise them a million dollars but only end up earning them a thousand, you should expect to receive a knock at your door and very soon!

When we first started off more than 15 years ago, there seemed to be a lot fewer hypnotists. Over the years many people caught onto the fact that this hypnosis stuff works and decided to open up shop. Now, in and of itself, this is not a bad thing because hypnosis is a very helpful tool for many people. So there is no problem with many people wanting to offer it as a service.

However, here lies the problem. There are many hypnosis companies out there that oversell the magic of hypnosis. They make it sound as if people come to them with all sorts of life problems, all of which get cured in a 45 minute session. By setting this unrealistic expectation, they are not only setting themselves up for failure but that are also leaving behind one more person who feels like they have failed or that hypnosis itself has failed.

This is where we differ from many other hypnosis companies. While it is true that most of our clients do not require more than a session or two and many of our MP3 clients see success very quickly, we are very up front and honest with people. We do not beat around the bush and we do not sugar coat what we do. We perform "true" hypnosis therapy and along with that comes the reality that we very well might not be able to "cure" everyone’s problems within a 45 minute hypnosis or by listening to our MP3’s one or twice.

Now, some folks may say that this can actually hurt our business because we are competing with companies who are boasting a super fast turn around almost like hypnosis is some magical force. However, we would rather lose a client or two and remain strong with our 98% success rate rather than have it drop to a 90% success rate by promising the moon to everyone who calls on us for service.

So in closing, just remember that if something sounds too good to be true, it most likely is. If a hypnotist is promising you a magical million, just don't be so surprised when you end up with far less.

Mel Gibson is learning hypnotism.

The 54-year-old actor-and-director has reportedly spent 10 days with Australian expert Rick Collingwood, who visited his Los Angeles home and taught him the powers of suggestion and how to put people into a trance.

Rick, who is a friend of Mel's brother Chris, said: "I was heading out to Los Angeles for work so Mel invited me over. I was with him for 10 days teaching him the technique.

"Mel's a natural, he's got the look as well as piercing blue eyes. He's going to be a great hypnotist.

"Chris talked to Mel about it over the phone and Mel got interested, too."

Though the 'Braveheart' star took to learning the technique instantly, Rick is unsure if he has any plans to use it.

He said: "He is very, very interested in it. He didn't say he wanted to learn it for a specific reason. He was just curious.

"I think he's just interested in the mind and human nature."

The award-winning actor - who took an eight-year hiatus from the profession to direct movies such as 'The Passion of the Christ' - recently announced his return to the front of the camera.

He said: "I walked away from it after 'Signs' because I just felt I was stale and I needed to maybe... it wasn't ringing my bells. So I focused on directing and writing and producing and all that kind of stuff, and then it was time to come back.

"I got the acting bug back because I felt like, all of a sudden, maybe after all these years, I might have something to offer again."

Hypnosis may help with Tourette syndrome

Self-hypnosis training may help children with Tourette syndrome, study finds

July 12, 2010 | By Jeannine Stein, Los Angeles Times

Children and teens with Tourette syndrome found help for their tics via sessions of self-hypnosis, according to a new study published online Monday in the Journal of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics. The study included 33 participants ages 6 to 19 who had tic disorders. Tourette syndrome is a neurological disorder that can cause involuntary tics such as coughing, yelling, head jerking and blinking. It's typically treated with medication, which can have mild to severe side effects such as anxiety, weight gain and sluggishness, but new non-drug treatments are showing promise.

Cigarettes Harbor Harmful Bacteria

Newswise — Cigarettes are "widely contaminated" with bacteria, including some known to cause disease in people, concludes a new international study conducted by a University of Maryland environmental health researcher and microbial ecologists at the Ecole Centrale de Lyon in France.

The research team describes the study as the first to show that "cigarettes themselves could be the direct source of exposure to a wide array of potentially pathogenic microbes among smokers and other people exposed to secondhand smoke." Still, the researchers caution that the public health implications are unclear and urge further research.

"We were quite surprised to identify such a wide variety of human bacterial pathogens in these products," says lead researcher Amy R. Sapkota, an assistant professor in the University of Maryland's School of Public Health.

"The commercially-available cigarettes that we tested were chock full of bacteria, as we had hypothesized, but we didn't think we'd find so many that are infectious in humans," explains Sapkota, who holds a joint appointment with the University's Maryland Institute for Applied Environmental Health and the department of epidemiology and biostatistics.

"If these organisms can survive the smoking process - and we believe they can - then they could possibly go on to contribute to both infectious and chronic illnesses in both smokers and individuals who are exposed to environmental tobacco smoke," Sapkota adds. "So, it's critical that we learn more about the bacterial content of cigarettes, which are used by more than a billion people worldwide."

The study will appear in an upcoming edition of the journal Environmental Health Perspectives and the pre-copyedited manuscript has been posted online.

PUBLIC HEALTH SIGNIFICANCE

The researchers describe the study as the first snapshot of the total population of bacteria in cigarettes. Previous researchers have taken small samples of cigarette tobacco and placed them in cultures to see whether bacteria would grow. But Sapkota's team took a more holistic approach using DNA microarray analysis to estimate the so-called bacterial metagenome, the totality of bacterial genetic material present in the tested cigarettes.

Among the study's findings and conclusions:

* Commercially available cigarettes show a broad array of bacterial diversity, ranging from soil microorganisms to potential human pathogens;
* The is the first study to provide evidence that the numbers of microorganisms in a cigarette may be as "vast as the number of chemical constituents;"
* Hundreds of bacterial species were present in each cigarette, and additional testing is likely to increase that number significantly;
* No significant variability in bacterial diversity was observed across the four different cigarette brands examined: Camel; Kool Filter Kings; Lucky Strike Original Red; and Marlboro Red;
* Bacteria of medical significance to humans were identified in all of the tested cigarettes and included Acinetobacter (associated with lung and blood infections); Bacillus (some varieties associated with food borne illnesses and anthrax); Burkholderia (some forms responsible for respiratory infections); Clostridium(associated with foodborne illnesses and lung infections); Klebsiella (associated with a variety of lung, blood and other infections); and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (an organism that causes 10 percent of all hospital-acquired infections in the United States).

"Now that we've shown that a pack of cigarettes is loaded with bacteria, we will conduct follow-up research to determine the possible roles of these organisms in tobacco-related diseases." Sapkota says.

For example, do cigarette-borne bacteria survive the burning process and go on to colonize smokers' respiratory systems? Existing research suggests that some hardy bacteria can be transmitted this way, the researchers say. This might account for the fact that the respiratory tracts of smokers are characterized by higher levels of bacterial pathogens. But it's also possible that smoking weakens natural immunity and the bacteria come from the general environment rather than from cigarettes. Further research will be needed to determine the possible health impacts of cigarette-borne bacteria.

RESEARCH TEAM

Sapkota is the lead and corresponding author. She conducted the research with Sibel Berger under the guidance of Timothy M. Vogel in 2007 at the Environmental Microbial Genomics Group, Laboratoire Ampère, UMR CNRS 5005, Ecole Centrale de Lyon in Lyon, France.

Does Subliminal Messaging really work?

Although live hypnosis is different than subliminal messaging they are sort of tied together in the sense that they both have to do with reprogramming our way of thinking. And as a leading hypnotist, I also carry my own line of subliminal audio products for our clients. Now, I admit that if I tried every single minute for the rest of my life to convince everyone in the world that subliminal messaging works, I would still never be able to do so. I mean heck, there are people alive today that still will not accept that we landed on the moon.

And so, this blog post is not meant to prove or debunk whether subliminal messaging actually works. But rather, it is to simply show that despite whether you believe that subliminal messaging works or not, the fact that it is still often used does show that there is something behind it and therefore, very real.

In 1978, Wichita, Kansas TV station KAKE-TV received special permission from the police to place a subliminal message in a report on the BTK Killer (Bind, Torture, Kill) in an effort to get him to turn himself in. The subliminal message included the text "Now call the chief," as well as a pair of glasses. The glasses were thought to be of significance to the killer because when BTK murdered Nancy Fox, there was a pair of glasses lying upside down on her dresser. So, police felt that the glasses would stir up some remorse emotion and included them in the subliminal message. Although the attempt was unsuccessful and police reported no increased volume of calls afterward, the fact that they tried this method demonstrates an acknowledgment in the effectiveness of subliminal messaging.

Before the re-election of French president François Mitterrand in 1988, a subliminal picture of him was mixed in the title sequence of French national television daily news show, and it appeared for several consecutive days.

The subject was also prominently featured in the 1999 film Fight Club. Pictures of the main character, Tyler Durden, flash onscreen at various points during the earlier parts of the film, before Durden is introduced. Also, Durden is shown at his job as a projectionist, splicing pornographic flash frames into a film he is showing. A picture of a penis flashes before the end credits.

During the 2000 U.S. presidential campaign, a television ad campaigning for Republican candidate George W. Bush showed words (and parts thereof) scaling from the foreground to the background on a television screen. When the word BUREAUCRATS flashed on the screen, one frame showed only the last part, RATS. The FCC looked into the matter, but no penalties were ever assessed in the case.

In the British alternative comedy show The Young Ones, a number of subliminal images were present in the original and most repeated broadcasts of the second series. Images included a gull coming into land, a tree frog jumping through the air, a man gurning, and the end credits of the movie Carry On Cowboy. These were included to mock the then-occurring matter of subliminal messages in television. Although they may fall foul of the FCC guidelines, these images do appear in the U.S. boxset DVD Every Stoopid Episode.

Shaun Micallef's Australian 'Micallef P(r)ogram(me)' shows contained strange subliminal messages that can be seen on the DVD's. As they are of random, humorous statements, questions, etc., they are not regarded as advertising. They were usually images of politicians, as is the case with his more recent Newstopia.

In Warner Brothers' 1943 animated film "Wise Quacking Duck", Daffy Duck spins a statue which is holding a shield. For one frame the words "BUY BONDS" are visible on the shield.

The December 16, 1973 episode of Columbo titled "Double Exposure", is based on subliminal messaging: it is used by the murderer, Dr. Bart Keppler, a motivational research specialist, played by Robert Culp, to lure his victim out of his seat during the viewing of a promotional film and by Lt. Columbo to bring Keppler back to the crime scene and incriminate him. Lt. Columbo is shown how subliminal cuts work in a scene mirroring the real life James Vicary's experiment.

A McDonald's logo appeared for one frame during the Food Network's Iron Chef America series on 2007-01-27, leading to claims that this was an instance of subliminal advertising. The Food Network replied that it was simply a glitch.

In Formula One racing, the paint scheme of many cars would carry messages intended to look as if they were of banned tobacco products in many Grands Prix where tobacco advertising was banned, though many of these were jokes on the part of the teams (for example, Jordan Grand Prix ran Benson and Hedges sponsorship as "Bitten and Hisses" with a snake-skin design on their cars). A similar procedure was used by NASCAR driver Jeff Burton after the AT&T Mobility advertising was banned by a court order in 2007.

On November 7, 2007 Network 10 Australia's broadcast of the ARIA Awards was caught out for using subliminal advertising in an exposé by the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation).

In June-July 2007, Sprite used a type of obvious subliminal message, involving yellow (lemon) and green (lime) objects such as cars. The objects would then be shown inconspicuously in the same setting, while showing the word "lymon" (combining the words lime and lemon) on screen for a second at a time. They called this "Sublymonal Advertising." The previous year, Sprite used a similar advertising campaign, but this time it was tied in to The Lost Experience, an alternate reality game.

In Week 11 of The Apprentice: Martha Stewart in which candidates have to create an ad for the Delta's former low-cost commercial airlines Song, the team Matchstick used a 1/48th of a frame image at the bottom-right corner with the Song Airlines logo.

So again in closing, people will ultimately decide for themselves whether subliminal messaging works or not. But is it real? We believe that the above information not only shows that it is real but also makes you wonder…why would folks put so much work and effort into something that simply has no merit whatsoever? Seems like an awful waste of time.

How Safe is Sensa Weight Loss-Part 2

Lately we have received a lot of interest in our Sensa blog post. So much so that we felt that it might be a good time to do a follow up blog.

Being a professional hypnotist doesn’t make me naive to the realities of the world. And although I often promote the benefits of using hypnosis as a standalone item in place of diets, pills, medications and drugs, I also understand that things like nutritional value and proper exercise are also part of a well-balanced and healthy lifestyle. I simply feel that before people run out and begin purchasing that “new breakthrough” item a few things ought to be considered beforehand. That being said, let’s begin.

My personal opinion is that I am much more concerned about trying something that I know very little about, then I am about using something that I already know to be unhealthy for sure. My reason for this is simple. At least if I already know that something is harmful for me I have the choice based on all the facts-NOT to use that item. However, when there is a lack of data about a product due to no long-term studies being performed...well let's just say that I am not sure that I want to be a test subject for any company.

So let’s take a look at what Sensa is anyway.

This fad is often called “The Sprinkle Diet”. The premise is that by sprinkling some granules on your food before you eat will help you eat less and in return, lose weight.

These sprinkles were developed by Dr. Hirsch, who focuses his studies on taste and smell. The sprinkles are supposed to heighten the flavor of the food, making sweets sweeter and salty food saltier, tricking your brain into thinking you’re full. The Sprinkle Diet promises you that you can eat whatever you want without a thought for nutrition or health and that you’ll still lose weight because you’ll eat less.

So for many people this sounds like a dream come true. We have suddenly found the magical key to the entire kingdom. We have located that missing puzzle piece and solved all of our weight problems. If Albert Einstein were alive he would be scratching his head in disbelief at what we have accomplished. After all, this idea sounds even more awe inspiring than putting a man on the moon. Or is it?

Let's take a closer look at some overlooked factors.

When people talk about an item being safe or dangerous and healthy or unhealthy, there are always several factors involved in determining that outcome. For example, I could write an article that says “Cigarettes Are Safe.” And in my article I could go on to explain that I have had a cigarette sitting on my coffee table for 30 years now and it has not killed me so far. And so, in a sense this would 100% true. However, once I light that cigarette and begin smoking I am now playing by a whole new set of rules.

For that cigarette to actually be considered a harmful item I would most likely need to smoke many cigarettes every single day for an extended period of time before I begin to see exactly what affect smoking has on me. So this in and of itself, is what’s wrong with simply implying whether something is good or bad for you. A lack of knowledge and understanding about all of the factors involved.

So let’s look at why sprinkles may not be the best choice.

The #1 major flaw with The Sprinkle Diet is that the majority of people who are overweight and/or obese eat when they are NOT hungry and DO NOT stop when they are full!! If you’re overweight you’re very likely an emotional eater, a compulsive overeater, a binge eater, a food addict, or some combination of these. So even if The Sprinkle Diet tricks your brain into thinking it’s full, if you have any of these eating disorders you’ll still overeat just like you always have. It won’t matter if you think you’re full or not!

The second thing to look at is that there is no nutritional education involved. This item is all about eating the very same fast food, processed food, and junk food which contains sugar, unhealthy fats and loads of sodium. And these are the items that bring your metabolism to a slow crawl. So if you put weight loss aside and only look at health, you are still be eating the very same foods as before which causes inflammation in the body, the #1 cause of disease.

The third thing to consider is that there is no exercise plan. The Sprinkle Diet does nothing to promote regular cardiovascular activity or strength training because it is designed to be a "quick fix". Therefore, even if it does help you lose weight your body will only look thinner but that does not mean you are healthier. Remember that people who suffer from anorexia or who are diagnosed with cancer frequently lose weight. But that does not mean that their bodies are healthier for it.

The forth reason on our list is the lack of long term results. If you find that the Sprinkle Diet does work for you and you are happy with the results then you will have to continue to use those sprinkles forever. Realistically could a person do that? Sure, if the item is still available in the future and if you’re willing to continue paying $60.00 every month for the rest of your life, assuming that there will never be a price increase.

Number five is that the product is relatively new. They can call it "safe" all day long but the reality is that nobody truly knows what the long-term affect of putting these sprinkles on your food will be on your health in years to come. Look at Splenda for example, that’s a sweetener that greatly enhances the sweetness of your food and has been around for a while. Yet we still don’t have any idea what the long-term health effects are from using it.

And the last reason is that there is a lack of naturalness. Although we haven’t found the actual ingredients posted anywhere, the media reports that, “the sprinkles are non-caloric and contain artificial and natural ingredients approved for use in food products”. This is very misleading. After all, what else is currently approved for use in food products but necessarily healthy? Crystalline fructose, sodium, high fructose corn syrup, Splenda, MSG, and plain old table sugar just to name a few. Although these are all approved for use in food products, none of them are truly healthy for you and they certainly don’t help you lose any weight.

And so to wrap things up...The Sprinkle Diet does nothing to help you understand why you are overweight and why you overeat. It’s not a cure for depression, low self-esteem, a lack of nutritional understanding, emotional eating, a sedentary lifestyle, or unhealthy habits. So it’s a $60.00 a month POSSIBLE short-term fix with no long-term health benefits and to date, unknown long-term health risks.

And as for the health studies…Dr. Hirsch states that he did a “peer reviewed clinical study of nearly 1,500 people who used the sprinkles on everything they ate without changing their diet or exercise routine” and found that there was an average weight loss of 30.5 pounds in 6 months.

However, we don’t know who those 1500 people were. We don’t know if those people were already leading a healthy or semi-healthy lifestyle by exercising regularly and eating healthy the majority of the time. Because if they were, then most likely they were already on the path to losing weight anyway. So naturally if you give The Sprinkle Diet to a group like that then of course you’re going to see weight loss because they’re already working on it!

My conclusion: if you are considering dropping $60.00 or more per month for those sprinkles I strongly urge you to put your money into something that will give you a lifetime of healthy results. Spend 1/2 of that monthly Sprinkle Diet money on something like hypnosis, which can help you by encouraging you to eat healthier. And maybe take the money that you saved and invest it into something else that will actually make you feel better about yourself. No matter how you slice it, Sensa is just another unnatural magical mask that hides the root cause of something rather than actually fixing it.

Still perfer drugs to hypnosis?

Anti-smoking drug Chantix linked to suicidal thoughts, violent behavior and psychotic episodes. Chantix is used as a smoking cessation medicine or treatment. In 2009, the FDA required that the manufacturers of the smoking cessation drugs varenicline (Chantix) and bupropion (Zyban and generics) add new boxed warnings and develop medication guides for patients that highlight the risk of serious neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients using these products.

Hypnosis Going Mainstream:

Hypnosis Going Mainstream: Doctors Urged to Use Hypnosis to Alleviate Patient Pain During Some Procedures

A psychiatric researcher has called upon the United Kingdom's medical regulatory body to add hypnotherapy to its list of approved treatments for a much wider variety of conditions, in a presentation at a joint conference of the joint conference of the Royal Society of Medicine, the British Society of Clinical and Academic Hypnosis and the British Society of Medical and Dental Hypnosis.

"It is time for hypnosis to work its way into the mainstream of British medicine," said David Spiegel of Stanford University. "There is solid science behind what sounds like mysticism and we need to get that message across to the bodies that influence this area. Hypnosis has no negative side-effects."

Spiegel said that hypnosis is an effective treatment for a wide spectrum of conditions including allergies, high blood pressure and pain. He also urged that the procedure be used in lieu of anesthesia during some surgeries.

"It makes operations quicker, as the patient is able to talk to the surgeon as the operation proceeds, and it is cheaper than conventional pain relief. Since it does not interfere with the workings of the body, the patient recovers faster, too," he said. "It is also extremely powerful as a means of pain relief. Hypnosis has been accepted and rejected because people are nervous of it. They think it's either too powerful or not powerful enough, but, although the public are skeptical, the hardest part of the procedure is getting other doctors to accept it."

Marie-Elisabeth Faymonville of Liege University Hospital in Belgium said that she has carried out more than 6,000 operations using a combination of hypnosis and local anesthesia.

"The local anesthetic is used only to deaden the surface of the skin while a scalpel slices through it. It has no effect inside the body," she said. "The patient is conscious throughout the operation and this helps the doctor and patient work together. The patient may have to move during an operation and it's simple to get them to do so if they remain conscious. We've even done a hysterectomy using the procedure."

"Hypnosis Can Cause Brain Trauma..."

Do you think if we posted a statement like this in our ads, that we would get an overwhelming response for service requests? Wouldn't you agree that instead, most people would avoid taking a product that made such a statement? Think again.

Let’s take a look at the following for example:

Chantix Side Stop Smoking Pill Side Effects - from their website.
Cost: around $100 for a month’s supply

Side Effects:
Gastrointestinal Disorders

Nausea
Abdominal Pain
Flatulence
Dyspepsia
Vomiting
Constipation
Salivary Gland Conditions
Dry mouth

Psychiatric Disorders

Insomnia
Abnormal dreams
Sleep disorders
Nightmares

Nervous System Disorders
Headaches
Neurological Disorders
Dysgeusia
Somnolence
Lethargy and fatigue

Now, let’s take a look at our method
Hypnosis Side Effects
Cost: One time payment of less than $20.00 for our audio

Side Effects:
None

So why in the world would anyone chose to simply pay more money for something that can cause a greater health risk to them? It is simple. Companies actually use a form of hypnosis called television and radio commercials to convince people to buy their products. That is exactly what makes people run out and buy this stuff despite all the health risk disclaimers that by law, these drug companies have to post on their advertisements?

What is even more ironic is that fact that they are using hypnosis to accomplish this. Don’t be fooled for a moment…television and radio advertisements are not just cheap videos and audio’s which companies just slap up on a whim in hopes of getting a few customers. A lot of thought, planning and masterminding goes into creating them. Let’s face it, it is an art to be able to introduce a product that can be extremely harmful to people and yet, be able to market that same product in great quantities to the general public.

If any average person offered you a product that had half as many side effects you would run away! Yet the ads are so sweet, compassionate, touching and convincing that we can’t wait to call our doctors to get those prescriptions filled…what the heck…even if the product doesn’t work for us.

And so, the next time you run out to buy something that you have seen on television, heard on a radio commercial or even read on some company sign as you were passing by it, just remember the real reason why you bought it. You were actually hypnotized into buying.

Hypnosis used to Study Moral Judgment:

(NaturalNews) Many scientists and researchers often ponder the idea of moral philosophy. Where does moral judgment come from and how are the rules defined? Are moral judgments a result of reasoning through a particular situation or are they a result of an emotion and based on feelings? People can argue either position. However, recent studies have pointed towards moral judgment stemming from emotion and intuition rather than reasoning. One such study used hypnosis to show that moral judgment can be influenced with emotions.

Nado, Kelly, and Stich (2006) pondered both sides of the debate on whether moral judgment stems from rationality or emotions. There are research-backed responses to both. One argues that all judgments are based on some form of reasoning. Another argues that reason is the slave of passions. Researchers concluded that there is still a lot to be learned about moral judgment. The analysis of how people make their moral judgments is still a young debate and more research needs to be conducted.

Many researchers have focused on moral judgment coming from reasoning. However, a meta-analysis was conducted (Green & Haidt, 2002) involving both psychology and cognitive neuroscience research that focused on moral judgment. They discovered that although reasoning can play a significant role in moral judgment, there is more evidence that intuition and emotion determine moral judgment. They also found through brain imaging that many areas of the brain contribute to making moral judgments.

Wheatley and Haidt (2005) researched how hypnosis has an effect on moral judgment. In the study, 64 highly hypnotizable participants received a series of group-hypnosis sessions. During these sessions, participants were given a posthypnotic suggestion to feel disgusted when reading a particular word either `take` or `often.` Posthypnotic suggestions are designed so that the participant does not remember the instructions until prompted to remember.

Results of the research showed that when participants were asked to judge specific situations, they showed more disgust when the specific word was used in the description. When the word was present they rated moral transgressions as more morally wrong. The researchers concluded that intuition and feelings can influence moral judgments.

Although the topic of moral judgment is still up for debate, recent research shows advancement in determining what leads humans to make certain moral judgments. Hypnosis enables researchers to access the subconscious mind to help them understand the non-reasoning ability of the human mind. Hypnosis is a great tool to use in determining whether moral judgment is based on reason or emotions.

How Safe is Sensa Weight Loss

So I sign into my email account this morning and low and behold...I see a huge spam email about how to lose weight with Sensa. Since I never heard about this item I decided to do a quick search to see what I can learn about it.

Whether or not Sensa causes any side effects is not known yet and it is not FDA approved (not that all FDA approved treatments and diets are safe). Further, this treatment could create a dependency to keep your weight in check and it is obvious that the supplies are going to cost a bit.

One thing you should understand before taking any of these over the counter product and pills, be it Sensa or any other treatment is that it can end up doing more harm than good. Still so many people resort to pills, surgeries and other harsh treatments to get rid of their fats. Despite the fact that these treatments are dangerous and can potentially cause permanent damage to the body. The companies that offer them still keep offering such products and treatments so that they stay in business. The best effective alternatives to weight loss are both easy and inexpensive and that's the primary reason why we tend to overlook them. The right treatment to weight loss will not only result in you losing weight but also restore your body to proper functioning and keep you at the top of your health.

Any of the drugs and pills no matter how good they work or how safe they are, can never truly offer a permanent solution to weight loss.

More Proof That Hypnosis Is The Way To Go!

Now, before I get started I just want to mention that I like Kirstie Alley and I am not picking on her. But I do have a burning question that needs to be answered…what happened to that wonderful Jenny Craig weight loss program? I guess it was just another prime example that weight loss programs and diets do not really work. If you want to change even your body, you have to change your mind first.

Here at Positive Change Hypnosis we are constantly telling people that in order to create change, even when it comes to changing our bodies, the change itself has to be created in our minds. This is because when we have to constantly think about the change itself, we are then solely relying on willpower and conscious thoughts, which can be difficult.

Think about driving a car or simply walking down the street for a moment. When you are driving a car or taking a walk down the street most of the actions that you performing are automatic and come natural to you. While drive a car, you do not have to think about it each time you apply the gas or the break. The same goes for walking. When you are taking a walk, do you really have to think about putting one foot in front of the other?

These actions come natural to us because while we are performing them, our subconscious minds are running on autopilot and doing the work for us. And so, when we want to change something in our lives, it simply makes all the sense in the world to change our way of think about it.

Take into consideration losing weight and quitting smoking. When we try to quit smoking or lose weight many people rely on willpower only. Although we are putting forth our best efforts, we are still left with the lingering thoughts of cigarettes or food floating around in our minds. And because these reminders remain in our minds we are constantly fighting the urges to overcome them.

People stand a better chance of success by using hypnosis because it allows us to change something in our lives by removing or change our thoughts about it. In essence, if you brain no longer craves cigarettes or snacks, it will naturally be easier to stop smoking or lose weight because you are no longer thinking about these things.

GUIDED IMAGERY IS HIGHLY EFFECTIVE AT REDUCING HOT FLASHES

Two years of results show that hypnosis (or ‘guided imagery’) is highly effective at reducing the severity and frequency of hot flashes. This approach is effective with both Menopausal women and those with hot flashes driven by medical conditions.

The approach has been so effective with hot flashes caused by post-breast cancer medication that we have undertaken a study with several physicians at Women and Infants hospital.

For most women two to three sessions are all that are needed to dramatically reduce hot flashes. In many cases excellent results are achieved using recorded discs.

See the case study below:

Information provided by:
Women and Infants Hospital of Rhode Island

ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier:
NCT00711529

Premenopausal women with breast cancer who receive endocrine therapy (e.g. tamoxifen) and/or chemotherapy are at risk for experiencing premature menopause because of their treatment. The resulting symptoms, most notably hot flashes, can cause significant detriment to a patient's quality of life. Treatment for menopausal symptoms with the gold standard of hormone replacement therapy is not done routinely as it is unclear whether it can increase risk of tumor recurrence. In addition, many medical oncologists feel it is contraindicated in this population, especially among women whose breast cancers have estrogen receptors. This has lead to an increased interest in options other than estrogen replacement in the treatment of hot flashes, though most investigations of alternative medications have shown a suboptimal response.

Recent studies have suggested that non-drug treatments using alternative or complementary therapies may be effective. Specifically, hypnosis has been promoted as a means to control hot flashes, though it has not been tested in a randomized fashion. In accordance with the National Cancer Institute's recent initiatives to expand the goals of clinical trials to include symptom management studies, our purpose is to evaluate the role of complementary and alternative therapies for improvement of symptoms in women with breast cancer. Specifically, we plan to evaluate the use of hypnotherapy for the treatment of therapy-induced hot flashes in breast cancer survivors. We intend to recruit 60 women into a pilot feasibility trial comparing hypnotherapy to the drug gabapentin (Neurontin®) for the treatment of therapy-induced hot flashes in eligible women who are receiving care at the Breast Health Center. We have chosen gabapentin based on recent studies showing it may be an effective non-estrogen treatment for this indication.

We will identify patients who are experiencing at least one daily hot flash as a result of the treatment they received for their breast cancer for participation. When enrolled, they will be randomized into either the treatment arm, in which they will receive daily gabapentin, or the experimental arm, in which they will undergo weekly hypnotherapy.

Our study hypothesis is that hypnotherapy will be more effective than gabapentin in the control of hot flashes in this population.

Does Hypnosis Scare You? Should It?

Sometimes the story starts out the same. A man or woman calls me about a smoking problem. The problem is that his or her doctor says they need to stop smoking and they are truly ready to quit but nothing seems to be working.

Cold turkey seems to have failed along with those magic pills or nicotine drugs that their doctor has prescribed and they have been faithfully taking. So now, he or she is not only taking pills but is also continuing to smoke at the same time. Since they are now even more desperate, they figured they would call me to help them out.

So, he or she visits our office and in a session or two, successfully kicks the habit. Now, at this part of the story most folks would agree that the ending results of this person quitting in one or two sessions is amazing. And while we would totally agree with this, there is also a sad part to this story. The sad part is that some people are so afraid of hypnosis that they will try everything else first, including drugs with known and unknown side effects.

Now some may argue that EVERYTHING including hypnosis has some sort of side effects. So if this is true what exactly are the side effects of hypnosis? Is it dangerous?

The truth is that hypnosis does have a side effect and it is called relaxation. Now, there is really only one problem with the kind of relaxation which hypnoses causes. You have to make sure after your session ends that you are fully awake, alert and aware before leaving your session, crossing a street or driving home. So if you consider relaxation a negative side effect, then there you have it.

But that is not the end of the story...

I am disappointed that we have not fully set the record straight on hypnosis, particularly hypnosis for the purpose of self improvement. Not to point fingers or act like a stick in the mud, but I think that much of the misunderstanding about hypnosis comes from stage hypnosis which has been used for entertainment.

A few years back while I was telling people about my hypnosis company, I noticed I got a mixed reaction from many of my friends and family members. Some acted a little afraid while others seemed interested in trying it out. But one thing still stands out to this day.

My sister showed an interest in wanted to undergo hypnosis and one of her friends said "I would love to watch you hypnotize her." I remember that when she made this comment, although it was innocent, the reality set in. Many times when I tell people that I perform hypnosis they act as if I am a magician who was going to make them bark like a dog, cluck like a chicken, make them disappear or saw them in half.

The truth is that I do not perform magic or illusion tricks. I perform therapy treatment for people. With that said, I often find that there are a lot of misconceptions about hypnosis and even some that can cause common fears. So I figured I would list a few of them below.

"I will get stuck in hypnosis forever."

If you have ever seen the movie Officespace, you may remember the part when the hypnotist dies during the session and the main character gets stuck in the hypnotic state. Although it is a funny movie, this is false. You cannot get stuck in hypnosis even if your practitioner were to collapse in the middle of your session, and not end the session. Instead, what would happen is that after not getting any input for a few minutes, your subconscious mind would take notice and then would exit the hypnotic state. And you would naturally wake yourself.

"The hypnotist will make me tell my secrets. "

Again maybe another entertaining plot for a movie but not true. Secrets such as bank account numbers or other personal life topics are safe. To begin with, no reputable hypnotist would try and obtain this information but even if he or she did, your powerful subconscious mind, whose main purpose is to protect you, would call a foul and keep quiet.

"I will become a robot under the control of the hypnotist."

Think about it for a moment, if this were true, I would rule the world. This is similar to the above. Your subconscious mind is geared and designed to protect you from danger and damage and therefore, would simply not participate in a venture of this kind.

"I read about a cult leader who used hypnosis."

Frankly the cult leaders who lure people into blind devotion are using charm, charisma and persuasion tactics and not hypnosis. Sometimes people might describe the feeling of being hypnotized as an explanation for "why they fell for it." They may even use it as an excuse because they do not want to appear foolish or weak minded for believing in something. But again this does not mean that the cult leader actually performed hypnosis on them.

"I can not be hypnotized so I would be wasting my money."

Many people think that they are too smart to be hypnotized, too antsy to be hypnotized, too unlike-everyone-else to be hypnotized, and more. Here is the truth, with a heaping spoonful of honesty. If you do not want to be hypnotized or can not follow instructions for going into hypnosis, then it may not work for you. If you are too distracted to concentrate, or exceedingly nervous about trying, it may take a little more effort than the average person, but it is do-able. If you have an IQ of less than 70, you might have difficulties, but if you are reading and understanding this blog, you are good to go.

A little more about this: I have worked with clients on referral from psychotherapists for help with ADD/ADHD. With patience and intention, they even learned to hypnotize themselves.
If you think you will feel uncomfortable with the hypnotist, just not in the mood, or you need some questions answered first, it is okay to get those covered before your session. It is also okay to be a little scared about being hypnotized. Fear holds within it two things - A respect for something that may be powerful and life changing and a desire to keep yourself safe. Both are worthwhile thoughts.

In closing, people should get educated about any life changing decisions that they make including hypnosis. For example, if you want to feel even safer about hypnosis, look for documented cases where hypnotists were sued by their clients for unprofessional behavior. Now compare those to other mental health professionals, and doctors, and dentists too. The number of hypnotists would not fill a hotel room.

So you see, the more you know and understand, the more powerful you become.

Interesting Facts...

According to the International Health, Racquet &Sports Club Association, 50% of all new health club members quit within the first six months of signing up. The reasons for quitting are as many as there are people who quit.

"Time Management Facts and Figures," Dr. Donald E. Wetmore says that 90% of those who join health and fitness clubs will stop going regularly within the first 90 days.

More interesting facts:

Can you notice anything that stands out in the banner above which was taken directly from the merchant website? How about the little disclaimer that says "Results not typical."

If you read the banner above which was also taken from the merchants website directly, the information itself can be a little scary.

We all want to change, look better and feel better. But the reason for this information is to remind people that change can be healthy and good for us but it is important to remember that unless we take measures to ensure our success, there is a pretty good chance that our goals will not be met or worse yet, we can cause injury to ourselves.

When we make the decision to quit something that we started that decision is made within our minds. Therefore, the only difference between people who succeed and people who fail is that the people who succeed have simply changed their way of thinking.

The bad news is that only a few people have the natural ability to change their way of thinking on their own. However, the good news is that the rest of us do have tools that we can use such as hypnosis to help keep us motivated.

So if you have made any decision to change your life, be sure to take time to convince your brain to follow through with it.

Hypnosis & Hayfever

Forty-seven subjects with known skin sensitivity to pollen and/or house-dust were divided into five groups and tested with four strengths of allergen. The prick-test method was employed.

In the first part of the investigation a group of unhypnotized subjects were compared with a group who had suggestions made under hypnosis that their skin reactions to the allergen would not occur when tested a second time.

A significant diminution in the size of the weal was obtained in the hypnosis group at the lower two strengths of allergen. In the second part of the investigation the subjects were divided into three groups.

All were hypnotized, no suggestions regarding skin reactions were given to one group, the second group were given suggestions that only on one arm would the skin reactions be less or not recur, and in the third group the suggestion was made about the reactions on both arms. There was found to be a similar decrease in the response to prick-tests after hypnosis in all three groups.
