The Power of the Subconscious Mind

Think of the subconscious mind as the storage room of everything that is currently not in your conscious mind. It stores all your previous life experiences, your belief system, your memories, your skills, all situations you've been through, and all images you've ever seen. The best way to understand the subconscious mind is through the example of someone who's just started to learn how to drive a car.

At the beginning, he or she might hardly be able to hold a conversation with anyone while driving as they would be focusing entirely on the different moves involved with driving. That's because they are using their conscious mind to drive.

But within a few weeks, the driving process would begin to become automatic without having to do any thinking. Suddenly over a short period of time, the driver may even being performing other tasks such as using a cell phone or talking to passengers while they are driving. This is on account of the fact that the driving information or the process of driving has been transferred to the subconscious mind and so the conscious mind is free to function on something else, like talking or using a cell phone.

Sadly, this also contributes to the reason why most car accidents happen within 3 to 5 miles of your home. While driving within this radius, since it has become so routine or second nature, your conscience mind becomes so unaware of the actual task of driving, that it hardly even focuses on driving aspect at all.

In fact automobile insurance companies know this. That is why they may actually charge you more money and not less if you tell them that you only drive a few miles locally.

Now just the same as recording helpful information like driving, the subconscious mind also records not so nice things as well. For example, when you were a child, your main source of knowledge was your parents. If your parents pointed out an animal and told you that it was called a dog you immediately believed them. And since you also found that everyone around you supported this idea, it turned into a strong belief.

But what if your parents kept telling you that you were fool or dumb? What would be the result? Well, the result would be that you would grow up thinking that it's true, and you may end up feeling inferior without even knowing that this was the root cause for your feelings of inferiority.

Now, you may be asking yourself, what could be strengthening this belief? This time it would be you. Your subconscious mind would just pick every clue that supports this belief while ignoring everything else. For example, if someone rejected you the first thing that you would think of is that the reason why you were rejected must have been because you are dumb or a fool.

So how do we get rid of the bad items? Well, when you become hypnotized your conscious mind filters will get turned off. Doing so allows for creating new suggestions to replace the bad suggestions in your subconscious mind.

Going back to our driving example, when the information about driving is stored into your subconscious, it's stored as a program. Think of your mind as a computer and the driving information as software that can be run automatically whenever needed. The same goes for lots of other activities and emotions. Think of the case of someone shouting at you. The installed program of anger is launched and the result is a reactive behavior. Now your automatic reaction will depend on your programming. This programming may react by walking away or shouting back.

Through programming the subconscious mind with new programs, you can fix many problems in your personality, almost like removing a computer virus with virus removal software. Programming your subconscious can be done through hypnosis. The subconscious mind learns by repetition and not by logic. That is why you can convince someone to believe in something by repeating your argument again and again rather than using logic. Once the suggestion is repeated a few times, it becomes programmed into your subconscious mind and becomes second nature, just like driving a car.
