Famous People and Hypnosis

I wrote this article for a few reasons. The first being that although it is becoming much more accepted as a form of treatment I have to admit that when I mention to people that I perform hypnosis, many times I still get a reaction similar to as if I just told them that I perform black magic rituals or some kind of voodoo.

Now, I can sort of understand their reaction since hypnotherapy is still seen by many people as a little bit offbeat, even though it is a perfectly normal and natural art, just as yoga or meditation. I also can’t blame their reaction since we as a society, have grown so dependent on pills, medications and drugs. And so, since we do not fully understand the human mind and its potential, it is really no big surprise that many people doubt our own capabilities to create change

Furthermore, we have all been taught that personal change is hard, difficult, takes a lot of time and you need a lot of willpower to make it happen. However, if you were to ask the many people who do use hypnosis why it is that they use it, they would ALL say that hypnosis is easy, quick, natural and takes very little time, whilst the benefits are truly amazing. But again since this goes against all that we have been taught, to those who remain skeptical it simply can not be real.

The next reason I wrote this article is because when people think of hypnosis, we often get an impression of a magician on stage making people do silly things like barking like a dog. Well, I can tell you that hypnosis is used for a lot more than making people bark like dogs or cluck like chickens. The following is a list of some famous people that have used hypnosis and their reason(s) for using it.

Mark Knopfler, Matt Damon, Drew Barrymore, Ellen DeGeneres, Ashton Kutcher & Charlize Theron all beat their smoking habit through hypnosis.

Jackie Kennedy Onassis used hypnotherapy to relive & let go of tragic events in her life, including the assassination of her husband.

Tiger Woods' mental coach hypnotizes him to block out distractions and to focus on his golf game.

Kevin McBride, the celebrated Irish heavyweight boxing champion, summons his hypnotist before every fight, to get into the right frame of mind.

Jimmy Connors is said to have used hypnosis techniques to practice his winning strokes prior to the U.S. Open Championship.

Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809-92) repeated names to himself like a hypnotic mantra in order to access different states of consciousness in which whole poems came to him.

Mozart (1756-91) apparently composed the famous opera Cosi fan tutte while hypnotized.

Rachmaninov (1873-1943) reputedly composed one of his concertos following a posthypnotic suggestion.

Chopin (1810-1849) pianist and composer took classes in hypnosis at the University of Strasbourg.

Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud developed modern psychiatry as a result of learning about (and practicing) hypnosis.

Paul Daniels, magician, lost his fear of closed spaces after using hypnotherapy in 1996 with Dr. Robert Russell Ph.D.

In closing, these are just a few famous people who have used and benefited from the power of hypnosis. I hope that this article was able to inspire you a bit to maybe think of some reason why you might benefit from hypnosis.
